Helixifi. Complex information, a clearer interface.
An app project exploring how genetic information could become easier to navigate and understand, without hiding the uncertainty behind it.
The question behind it
Genetic information is a good example of something that can be technically detailed yet difficult to make sense of. A result, a label and a list of markers do not automatically tell someone what they are looking at, how strong the evidence is, or what it does not mean.
The idea behind Helixifi is to explore that explanation layer: a more approachable way to move through information about traits, supporting context and possible next questions.
Designing for understanding
The interface work focuses on how information is grouped, what a trait card reveals first, and how a person moves from an overview into more detail. The design explores browsing by goals and categories, rather than treating every piece of information as an isolated technical result.
A card needs a clear visual hierarchy: what the topic is, what the example result represents, and where to find more context. Recommendation previews and supporting explanations need their own space, rather than being presented as interchangeable with the result itself.
Building it in layers
The development project uses Next.js and TypeScript for the app and Supabase for the database foundation. The work includes interface prototypes, versioned database migrations and tests, with design decisions recorded alongside the implementation.
Separating the interface work from the underlying processing makes it possible to test how the product explains information before treating that interface as a finished service.
Where it stands
This is still a development project. The dashboard uses an illustrative example profile; it is not a demonstration of live DNA analysis. Scientific content review, real-input processing, privacy safeguards and production readiness require further work before a public launch.
Why I am building it
The interesting part for me is the same thread that runs through my commercial work: understanding a complex subject, asking what someone actually needs to know, and making the next step clearer. Helixifi lets me explore that through a product rather than a conversation.
