The starting point
I wanted the site to show what I work on and what I am interested in, without turning it into a generic services landing page. Work belongs here, but so do the side projects, the books, the cooking and the things that make an introduction feel personal.
An editorial identity
The visual direction pairs a warm stone background with near-black sections and a clay accent. A bold display face gives the page structure, while an italic serif adds a more relaxed, editorial contrast.
The portrait and its offset frame are a signature detail. Numbered section headings create a rhythm through the page without requiring every section to become another collection of identical cards.
Keep the technology proportional
Astro generates static HTML for the pages. TypeScript holds shared site data, and CSS custom properties define the typography, colour and spacing system. The main content does not depend on a client-side application starting up.
The portrait has responsive AVIF and WebP variants, and the fonts are served with the site rather than fetched from a third-party font service. JavaScript is reserved for small enhancements, including the mobile menu behaviour and the desktop portrait tilt.
The useful details
The name, introduction and contact actions appear immediately rather than waiting for an entrance animation. Mobile visitors get section navigation and a direct contact link. The career timeline stacks on smaller screens, and contact options have a clear primary and secondary hierarchy.
Keyboard focus, a skip link, reduced-motion preferences, readable small text and a usable print layout are part of the design, not a separate visual theme. The page still works with JavaScript disabled.
Room to grow, without padding
The project pages provide space to explain the thinking behind individual projects. I would rather add a useful story when there is something to show than fill the site with generic articles or thin pages for every topic I have worked with.
